The project culminated in a shared exhibition, but each class created its own final products (you can see the project sheet here). This page focuses on Spanish, where students focused on providing advice for lowering your environmental impact.

Final Product: a video Public Service Announcement, in Spanish, to highlight the importance of the Three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) to a Spanish-speaking audience.

Key Academic Skills and Content: Research into sustainable practices, scientific interpretation, foreign language pronunciation, collaboration, screenwriting, data analysis, presentation skills

Suggested Duration: 8-10 weeks

Project Save The Earth: Compost (Physics) https://classic.pblessentials.org/blog/pbl_kits/project-save-the-earth-compost-physics/ Fri, 24 May 2019 22:50:35 +0000 http://classic.pblessentials.org/unboxed/?post_type=pbl_kits&p=1509 Project Save The Earth is a collaboration between art, math, English, physics, and Spanish, focused around the challenge of saving the planet from environmental catastrophe. The project culminated in a shared exhibition, but each class created its own final products (you can see the project sheet here). This page focuses on Art, where students focused on studying the physics that drives composting.

Final Product: A compost bin commissioned by a client in the local community, designed to fulfill their specific needs.

Key Academic Skills and Content:

  • Developing and Using Models:  Students can use and construct models as helpful tools for representing ideas and explanations. These tools include diagrams, drawings, physical replicas, mathematical representations, analogies, and computer simulations. Develop, revise, and/or use a model based on evidence to illustrate and/or predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.
  • Constructing Explanations and Designing solutions: Students can apply scientific ideas, principles, and evidence to provide an explanation to a problem. Students can design, evaluate, and refine a solution to a complex real-world problem, based on scientific knowledge, and sources of evidence. Each proposed solution results from a process of balancing competing criteria of desired functions, technical feasibility, cost, safety, aesthetics, and compliance with legal requirements. The optimal choice depends on how well the proposed solutions meet criteria and constraints.

The project culminated in a shared exhibition, but each class created its own final products (you can see the project sheet here). This page focuses on math, where students used exponential equations to model the population decline of an endangered species, research their past population change, modeling it mathematically, and making predictions about the population in years to come.

Final Product: a poster displaying your findings.

The project culminated in a shared exhibition, but each class created its own final products (you can see the project sheet here). This page focuses on English, where students produced podcasts about the ways that humans are impacting the earth.

Final Product: A podcast narrating a group’s experience with doing a “personal environmental challenge”

Project Save The Earth: A Call to Action (Art) https://classic.pblessentials.org/blog/pbl_kits/project-save-the-earth-a-call-to-action/ Fri, 24 May 2019 17:40:58 +0000 http://classic.pblessentials.org/unboxed/?post_type=pbl_kits&p=1382 Project Save The Earth is a collaboration between art, math, English, physics, and Spanish, focused around the challenge of saving the planet from environmental catastrophe. The project culminated in a shared exhibition, but each class created its own final products (you can see the project sheet here). This page focuses on Art, where students focused on producing a “call to action”.

Essential Question: How can we influence a certain audience to minimize their impact on the earth?

Final Product: A stop-motion video or interactive activity that incorporates pathos and logos in order to give a “call to action” to participants to minimize their impact on the earth.

Key Academic Skills and Content: Concept designs, final designs, sculpture, video animation, marketing take away, applying ethos and pathos to their deliverable, using painting and drawing skills to apply the elements and principles of design.
