science – PBL Essentials Toolkit (Classic) http://classic.pblessentials.org Fri, 21 Aug 2020 23:11:58 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.10 http://classic.pblessentials.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/cropped-fav1-32x32.png science – PBL Essentials Toolkit (Classic) http://classic.pblessentials.org 32 32 Ditch The Plastics http://classic.pblessentials.org/blog/pbl_kits/ditch-the-plastics/ Fri, 05 Jun 2020 20:30:04 +0000 http://classic.pblessentials.org/?post_type=pbl_kits&p=2665 In the Ditch the Plastic Project, students study the environmental consequences of single-use plastics and design empathy-led solutions to reduce their fellow students’ dependence on plastic. In the first year that I did this project, students “upcycled” waste materials into items that ranged from teddy bears to skateboards. This year, the plan was for students to run a campaign in their school and local community to educate others on the effects of plastic pollution, and help others commit to making long term single-use plastic use changes – and then reflect on the campaign’s successes and failures and share their findings with local activists. Unfortunately, the school was closed due to Covid-19 before the “second year” version took place.

With that in mind, this “toolkit” includes both material from the first year of this project, and the changes I made to it for the second iteration.

Key Academic skills & Content: Students gain scientific investigation skills including how to gather and interpret data, explain and create models for scientific phenomena and design, evaluate and refine a solution for reducing the amount of plastic waste generated.

Students will be able to:

  • Conduct an investigation into the types and quantities of plastic waste in the community
  • Investigate the effects of plastics and microplastics on the natural environment
  • Observe and describe the physical and chemical changes to the Earth and biological species caused by plastic materials

Final product(s):

  • School-wide Campaign
  • Campaign Results Presentation to Local Community Members
  • Large Display made out of recycled plastic to hang in local university

Suggested duration: 6 weeks

Saving Earth’s Endangered Elements http://classic.pblessentials.org/blog/pbl_kits/save-our-endangered-elements/ Fri, 17 May 2019 18:54:08 +0000 http://classic.pblessentials.org/unboxed/?post_type=pbl_kits&p=1087 In the Saving Earth’s Endangered Elements project seventh grade science students researched the natural resources found within their cell phones and other electronic devices and created infographics to display their work. They utilized real-world data to understand the formation and distribution of these natural resources around the globe. By investigating human use and human impact on these natural resources, students were able to further expanded their work and understanding. Throughout the unit, students realized they wanted to put their actions where their learning was, so we hosted our first electronic waste recycling event. The project concluded with student created Public Service Announcements working as a Call to Action to recycle and conserve these limited natural resources for future generations.

Essential Question: How can we change our use of natural resources to make a positive impact?

Academic Skills & Content: Map making and interpretation, scientific research, creation and analysis of graphs, scientific drawings, identifying patterns in data, natural resource formation, distribution and uses of natural resources, rock cycle

Final Products: Endangered Element Infographic and Video Public Service Announcement

Suggested Duration: 8-10 Weeks
